There’s more tunes than you’ll ever know

DD011 - Afro-Ecuadorian Bomba

vspace= Oye como va este ritmo! Mixed in Ecuador by José - DJ Black - Mosquera Segura we bring you the rhythms of Afro-Ecuadorian “Bomba”.

Music that finds its ancestral origin in the Bantu cultures of the Congo and is now mainly being produced in the inland Chota Valley, just topside of the equator where it passes through Ecuador.  Most Afro-Ecuadorians however hail from the coastal province of Esmeraldas and are supposedly descendants of marooned survivors from a wrecked slave ship.

DJ Black himself likes to think of it as a local flavor of the mostly Cuban “Son” music, albeit with a more repetitive cadence. The typical dance performed at Bomba parties includes ladies making sensuous hip movements while balancing a tall glass bottle on top of their head. Crafty!

A mi me gusta la bomba, si!

(the track list of this deepdigger exclusive will be provided mañana)

For your enjoyment,

Mr. Deeds

PS: “Esmeraldas” are precious gem stones, but rather than many emeralds being found in the region, I personally have reason to believe the province’s name to be a reference to the character of some of the people born there. TQM!

    Hey Dominic,

Honestly, I’ve never been to Quito. I spent about six months in Guayaquil and didn’t see any DJ spin vinyl. Mixing music videos is really the hottest thing in the clubs and “salsotecas”.

My girlfriend did bring along some second-hand vinyl on her last visit to Europe. I’ll ask her where she found those (Guayaquil too) and get back to you.

    Saludos,

    Deeds.

    Dominic!

In Guayaquil, there’s a record shop called “JD Fero Guzman” that sells second-hand latin vinyl. It’s in the centre of Guayaquil, close to the principal road (and metrovia stop) Boyaca, at the intersection of c/ Luis Urdaneta y c/ Padre Solano.

Most of the vinyl on sale is old-school Bolero and Pasillo music and some Salsa. Newer Salsa, Reggaeton, Merengue, Bachata, Cumbia, Techno-Cumbia, Bomba and the likes is sold on CD.

Good luck! And feel free to link back to me when you get to Guayaquil, I could give you some more pointers around the place.

    Deeds.
